George Santayana was born on December 16, 1863 in Madrid Spain. His original name is Jorge Augustín Nicolás Ruiz De Santayana. He was a Spanish-American poet, philosopher and humanist. He made his important contribution to speculative philosophy, literary criticism and aesthetics. He resided in Europe from 1912 , chiefly in Italy and France.

He settled permanently in Rome in 1924. He took rooms in a Catholic nursing home and began Persons and Places a three-volume autobiography. These three volumes published in 1944, 1945 and in 1953. He died few month before his 89th birthday in September 1952. As he had wished, he was buried in the Catholic cemetery of Rome in a plot that is reserved for only Spanish nationals.
